How to Take Action on the 2024 Federal Budget

(Excerpts from CAUT Memorandum 24:11 From: David Robinson, Executive Director)

The federal government will table the federal budget on April 16. CAUT members and staff have been meeting with parliamentarians and government officials, encouraging them to adopt the recommendations contained in the Know More: Invest in Canadian Research, Science and Post- Secondary Education pre-budget consultation document.

One of our recommendations, the proposed changes to the Companies’ Creditors Arrangement Act (CCAA), is poised to pass into law.

On the call for more research funding, there is a need for extra support from our members as the budget is in the final stages of preparation.

CAUT has joined the Coalition for Canadian Research to call for 2 key items in Budget 2024:

▪ Boosting granting council budgets for core programming by at least ten percent, or $400 million annually for five years.

▪ Increasing the number and value of graduate student scholarships and post-doctoral fellowships by $200 million over 2 years.

CAUT has partnered with a group of stakeholders to create the Coalition for Canadian Research. The coalition is calling on the government to include the following key items in the upcoming federal budget:

▪ Boosting granting council budgets for core programming by at least ten percent, or $400 million annually for five years.

▪ Increasing the number and value of graduate student scholarships and post-doctoral fellowships by $200 million over 2 years.

You can help make this a reality by letting Prime Minister Trudeau know that you support these requests.
